Mott-Hubbard transition of cold atoms in optical lattices

چکیده

We discuss the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition of cold atoms in optical lattices recently observed by Greiner et.al. (Nature 415, 39 (2002)). The fundamental properties of both phases and their experimental signatures are discussed carefully, including the limitations of the standard Gutzwiller-approximation. It is shown that in a one-dimensional dilute Bose-gas with a strong transverse confinement (Tonks-gas), even an arbitrary weak optical lattice is able to induce a Mott like state with crystalline order, provided the dimensionless interaction parameter is larger than a critical value of order one. The superfluid-insulator transition of the BoseHubbard model in this case continuously evolves into a transition of the commensurateincommensurate type with decreasing strength of the external optical lattice. Superfluid toMott-insulator transition of cold atoms in optical lattices

We review the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition of cold atoms in optical lattices. The experimental signatures of the transition are discussed and the RPA theory of the Bose-Hubbard model briefly described. We point out that the critical behavior at the transition, as well as the prediction by the RPA theory of a gapped mode (besides the Bogoliubov sound mode) in the superfluid phase, are...

Zoo of quantum phases and excitations of cold bosonic atoms in optical lattices.

Quantum phases and phase transitions of weakly to strongly interacting bosonic atoms in deep to shallow optical lattices are described by a single multiorbital mean-field approach in real space. For weakly interacting bosons in one dimension, the critical value of the superfluid to Mott insulator (MI) transition found is in excellent agreement with many-body treatments of the Bose-Hubbard model...

Mott domains of bosons confined on optical lattices.

In the absence of a confining potential, the boson-Hubbard model exhibits a superfluid to Mott insulator quantum phase transition at commensurate fillings and strong coupling. We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the ground state of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model in a trap. Some, but not all, aspects of the Mott insulating phase persist. Mott behavior occurs for a continuo...

Rotating states for trapped bosons in an optical lattice

Rotational states for trapped bosons in an optical lattice are studied in the framework of the Hubbard model. Critical frequencies are calculated and the main parameter regimes are identified. Transitions are observed from edge superfluids to vortex lattices with Mott insulating cores, and subsequently to lattices of interstitial vortices. The former transition coincides with the Mott transitio...

Dynamical Mean-field Theory for Correlated Lattice Fermions

Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is a successful method to investigate interacting lattice fermions. In these lecture notes we present an introduction into the DMFT for lattice fermions with interaction, disorder and external inhomogeneous potentials. This formulation is applicable to electrons in solids and to cold fermionic atoms in optical lattices. We review here our investigations of the...
